How to export OVA image (ESXi 6.7)?

Author : Martina Laleva

URL : http:////docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.7/com.vmware.vsphere.vm_admin.doc/GUID-B05A4E9F-DD21-43...

Topic Name : Export an OVF Template

Publication Name : vSphere Virtual Machine Administration

Product/Version : VMware vSphere/6.7

Question :

As the topic says. I see no such option in the browser. The Export function only export as OVF files (that doesn't actually work) It was so easy to do with the vSphere client. This browser based interface is truly a turd :-(.

Try switching to the FLEX GUI, not HTML5.

In FLEX "export OVF" works fine.

The virtual machine needs to be to power off.

Power off the virtual machine or vApp.

It's working on FLEX GUI and  HTML5.

Another alternative is to use OVFTool which is available free on VMware website.

As Diego mentioned, VM needs to be powered OFF.

Example of how to use OVFTool can be found here: https://www.michellelaverick.com/2018/04/using-ovftool/

Also - check for popup blockers.

I missed that detail - but found my the downloads for the ovf and each seperate vmdk will generate a download in a new windows/tab (at least that's what happened to me). I had the system sit overnight at 25% before realizing the downloads were blocked by chrome's popup blocker.

The Flex Client should work in this case. Please refer kb: VMware Knowledge Base  on how to access different types of clients:

  • vSphere Web Client - Adobe Flex (https://FQDN-or-IP-Address-of-VC/vsphere–client)
  • vSphere Client - HTML5 (https://FQDN-or-IP-Address-of-VC/UI)

I'm not seeing an option for OVA in either the HTML5 or Flex client options of vCenter 6.7.

Are you trying to export a VM already in template form? I ran into the same issue and just needed to mark the template as a VM. Once it was a powered off vm, I had the option to export as OVF.
