Installing Updates on VMware vCenter Server Appliance

The company I work for is running VMware vCenter Server Appliance version 5.5.0.30500 Build 4180648. Network Admin managing VMware is no longer with the company. I am now managing VMware Server Appliance's.

I logged into VMware vCenter Server via the browser, and noticed last update was installed on 2-28-2017. I checked for updates and there is an update available for version 5.5.0.31100 Build 9911210.

I don't have any experience updating VMware vCenter Server Appliance so I am unsure if its okay to install update. I am trying to avoid a situation If I install updates I don't want vSphere Client to go down along with VM's.

Do you guys know if there's a potential issue when installing updates on vCenter Server Appliances?

Hi @IT_systemadmin

It is not difficult or risky. you need to a backup first and VMs then perform the steps carefully

I would suggest, rather than installing the updates on 5.5 vCenter server upgrade the vCenter server to 6.* to be supported version. vSphere 5.5 support end of life in 19th Sep 2018.
