ubuntu guest works on windows host but fails on ubuntu host

Here's what I've done:

> Create and install Ubuntu guest under Windows 10 host

> Reboot host from Windows 10 to Ubuntu 19.04

> Try to run the same virtual machine but fails, and after that unless I restore it to a previous snapshot won't boot again even on Windows host.

How can I further debug this?

Welcome to the Community,

"... but fails ..."

Please provide some more details.

  • are you able to power on the VM?
  • what do you see inthe VM's console?
  • does it show any error messages?

Please use the Attach link in the lower right of the reply box, and attach the VM's vmware.log files. Rename them to s.th. like vmware1.log (for the working VM), vmware2.log (for the failed start on Ubuntu), vmware3.log (for the failed start on Windows).

Are you actually official tech support or another user? Just in case I should address this issue differently.

I'm a user like you, as most users here in the VMTN communities.

I don't have a setup like your's, so it's more guessing then knowing.

What you may try with the Linux VM is to disable Shared Folders to see whether the hgfs error disappears. The folders are Widows paths anyway, which do not exist on Linux.

For the VMware Tools installation on the Windows 10 VM, try to install the Tools from within the guest OS.

Just another user - not officially speaking for VMware ....

When you plan to run one VM from a Linuxhost AND from a Windows host you should be aware of some problems that are "self-inflicted" because of the platform change:

1. do not expect that you can suspend the VM in Linux and resume it in Windows - or the other way round.

2. do not assign any shared folders - obviously Linux does not like that at all - see your screenshots.

3. be aware that physical devices that you assign on one platform may use a different label on the other platform - which can result in invalid configurations.

The issues you describe here are to be expected when you move from Linux - Windows - or vice versa.

Alright, just checked if I could get support directly from vmware (https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/get-help) but it turns out that I only have Complimentary Support Level and it's only for 30 days, for some reason extended support options in store are greyed out.

shared folders were automatically disabled

It's a vmware problem, did the same steps with Oracle Virtualbox and no issues, the same ubuntu virtual machine runs perfectly at first glance on either windows or linux hosts.

Yes it is - you can avoid the problems with your Windows VM.
