Cannot launch VMs from VMwarePplayer launcher

I can run them by clicking on their vmx files but not from the launch dialog.

When I run:  $ /usr/bin/vmplayer

I get this:  I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/etc/vmware/hostd/proxy.xml"

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the 'bundle' but that has not helped.

I have been trying for hours to get VMware to work as it should.

Linux 19.1 host. VMware-Player-15.5.0-14665864.x86_64.bundle file. I have tried about 6 different 'solutions' listed by others with the problems, including changing file permissions and setting umask.Also running the bundle as root and using sudo, doing full uninstall each time to remove any possible holdovers that might be corrupting things.

The install was original - never run WMware on this Linux OS.

Also cannot get VMware tools to install on a Win7 client - option is greyed out in menu item [Virtual Machine] - trying to DL & Install as client starts gets a fail to find upgrader in the temp folder.

This SHOULD be simple - last time I used VMware (v12 maybe?) it was run, install client and everything worked.

Some of the errors...

root@Ringworld:/etc# strace -f /etc/vmware

execve("/etc/vmware", ["/etc/vmware"], 0x7fff75d74478 /* 22 vars */) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

fstat(2, {st_mode=S_IFCHR|0620, st_rdev=makedev(136, 1), ...}) = 0

write(2, "strace: exec: Permission denied\n", 32strace: exec: Permission denied

) = 32

getpid()                                = 6435

exit_group(1)                           = ?
