create an existing Win7 on a Harddrive1 as a VM Ware into a new Win10 on a new Harddrive2 - which VMTools I need ?

Hi,

I want to create an existing Win7 Installation

( on a existing Harddisk 1 )

as a VM Ware

into a new Win 10 Installation ( on a new second HardDisk 2 )

on my NoteBook.

So it should be a new Win10 Installation

with concurrent my old Win7 in a VMWare Enviroment.

In which way / steps it is possible and

what kind of VM Ware Tools I need ?

Do you have another software installed which uses that driver, e.g. another Converter version (an older VMware version, Starwind, ...)?

If yes consider uninstalling that version, reboot the host, and then run the installation again.

Welcome to the Community,

if I understand you correctly you are looking into converting the existing Win7 PC into a virtual machine!?

In this case you may use vCenter Converter: P2V-Converter für virtuelle Maschinen | VMware to do the job. Once done install VMware Tools within the guest VM (from the Workstation menu). VMware Workstation will automatically use the correct VMware Tools version based on the guest OS selection.

Hi Andre

thanks,

At this point in time my notebook only has one Harddrive with Win7

I think about to put in a second Harddrive with Win10 as primary OS

and then, from this new Installation Win10, create / use the

'old' Win7 as a VMWare under / from the Win10 System.

I don't think that it will work to run a virtual machine in VMware Workstation this way, i.e. directly from the physical drive.

However, maybe continuum has an idea.

Ok, do I understand it correctly, its more simple to

1. create and save a Win7 Image by using the converter tool from within the Win7

2. install the new OS Win10 and install  VM Workstation on this Win10 OS

3. install the Win7-Image ( saved from #1 ) as VM into the VM Workstation on Win10

thats right ?

Yes, that's basically how you'd usually do this.

  1. optional: backup the Win7 installation (using e.g. Acronis, etc.) if you are going to overwrite the current disk
  2. create a VM by using the converter tool from within the Win7, and save it on e.g. an external disk
  3. install the new OS Win10 and install VM Workstation on this Win10 OS (Note: you will need to disable Hyper-V on the Win10 installation)
  4. copy the Win7-VM's folder ( saved from #1 ) to the Win10 disk, and add it to the VMware Workstation inventory

Hi Andre,

It's possible on my PC to install converter Version  6.0.0

It's NOT possible to install converter version   6.2.0

in Version 6.0.0 the Destination  is max.  Version 11.0

will this work also inside actual Workstation / Player   Version  15  ?

Yes, this will work Older virtual HW versions are supported..

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that even virtual a hardware version as old as v4 would still work.

André

PS: In case the wizard defaults to an "IDE" virtual disk controller, change that to e.g. "LSILogic SAS".
