vsan cluster creation and migration of vms to vsan

Hi All,

can someone check the following requirement and suggest something

there are 4 esxi  cluster and 80 TB storage(from storwitz) is mounted to these esxi nodes in form of datastores.

we need to discard these esxi and creat a new vsan cluster .

what is the most convenient way of migrating vms to vsan from fc san .

following is what i think .

1:create new vsan cluster

2:present same old luns to new cluster

3:use storage vmotion to migrate vm files .

4:once migration is done remove fc switch and other fc component .

Yes that is the correct procedure.

Note if not all the hosts have adapters for FC and/or configuring these and zoning etc. would be time consuming, you could just attach the FC storage to a single host and this will be able to migrate everything to the vsanDatastore.

thnaks for your response Bob .however even single FC HBA is an extra cost incurred while considering only vsan solution .

i found  that xvmotion can be the simplest  option if we dont need any extra hardware(i.e FC HBA) .

That will go over the Management network though which (assuming your environment is like 90%+ of most) is on 1Gbps links and thus be a very slow process. Another alternative would be to temporarily add an existing host configured with the FC storage to the vSAN cluster (just need to configure vSAN traffic and use Evaluation license or temporarily one of the other nodes vSAN license) and then just normal SvMotion from FC datastore to vsanDatastore.

thnaks for suggesting alternative solution.

lets say for time being i am chossing xvmotion over alternative solution.

considering the folowing .

1:nics are 10 gbps.

2:vmotion vlan and other app vlans   are available to both clusters as they are in same decanter and all port groups are in vDS .

i think above two will be sufficient for migration of vms from fc to vsan or do we need to consider anything else.
