vCenter 6.0 to VCSA 6.7 migration: Stuck on starting VMware Identity Management Service

Hey all,

We are attempting to migrate a vCenter 5.0 server to VCSA 6.7. everything worked well until we got to 5% in the "Set up target vCenter Server and start services" portion. The install just seems to hang there. I have gone through the logs I could find and the only issue that stands out to me is this in  `/var/log/vmware/sso/gclogFile.0.current`

I have googled around and applied the `/etc/hosts` fix found here https://cstan.io/?p=8962&lang=en and it does not make a difference. I come here having exhausted all my options found online.

We are migrating from a vCenter server with an embedded PSC and just one instance(no linked clones) and an external MSSQl database. I have a feeling the fix is increasing the JVM heap size but I cannot seem to find where I wood do that.

try this

In a Web browser, navigate to https://VCSA_IP:5480.

  1. Click the vCenter Server tab.
  2. Click the Services tab.
  3. Click Inventory Size.
  4. Select one of these options depending on the size of the configured memoryavailable to the virtual machine: Small: Virtual machine RAM 4GB-8GB. JVM Heap settings for the individual components

vmware kb 2066099

Thanks for the tip but we are still going through the initial migration process so the we UI is not available. All we see is the installer progress. I did find this VMware Knowledge Base and not eh service seems to  be running. `service-control --status vmware-sts-idmd` shows the service as running but the installer is still stuck at 5%

Any idea how to get it to see that the service has started? Or does service-control report it as running but it is actually not running? We have rebooted the VM a few times, does that essentially freeze the install? The first time we rebooted it, we were told to do so by the installer.

We waited and it did not move. So we decided to start over and it worked. The 2 thing we did differently were:

  1. Deployed a medium instead of a small size VCSA
  2. Did not reboot he VCSA when the migrator told us to when it changed the mac so match the source vCenter

We hypothesize that the migration process does not handle the VCSA being rebooted too well.
