Using Dell Custom image for ESXi 6.7 Update 2

Sorry for the stupid questions. I'm fairly new to VMware and making some great mistakes

We've got a stand alone ESXi host (Dell Poweredge R630) that came with Dell custom ESXi 6.0 update 3

I upgraded to ESXi 6.7 update 2 using an ISO downloaded from the VMWare website, without realising that I should have really used the custom dell image from the Dell Website (D'oh)

Now the version of VMWare on the host is showing as 6.7 update 2 but there's also a banner message that appears showing that this is Dell Custom image for 6.0 update 3

I've put the service tag of the machine into the Dell website and downloaded the custom image for 6.7 update 2

Is it safe for me to run the upgrade from VMWare image for 6.7 update 2 to the Dell custom image for 6.7 update 2 ?

Thanks

Hi ClemFandango

Is it safe for me to run the upgrade from VMWare image for 6.7 update 2 to the Dell custom image for 6.7 update 2 ?

First of all , do a backup of your ESXi configuration.

To answer to your question, i would say yes, the differences between VMWare and Manufacturer custom image is about drivers.

I lived the same issues with HPE servers and i didn't have any problems while update from vmware image to HPE Custom.

After the upgrade just do an Update Manager Scan from your vCenter to check if inadvertently some drivers, patches, or extensions miss to your ESXi to be fully compliant.

Let me know how it runs Smiley Happy

This post definitely came around the right time for me. Going directly to Dell's website with my hosts service tag number I was able to download the correct 6.7u1 iso. Hope OP was able to get his issues resolved.
