Screen resolution issue when running Windows 10 x 64 in Fusion 11.1.0 with macOS 10.14.5 (Mojave)

I've screen resolution issue when running Windows 10 x 64 in Fusion 11.1.0 with macOS 10.14.5 (Mojave) on MacBook Pro 15.4inch retina (2880 x 1800 resolution).

Recently updated Fusion to v11.1.0, after which the screen resolution issue started, prior to which the virtual machine screen resolution as perfect at 2880 x 1800.

So, on booting Fusion a small window displays of approx 100mm x 100mm (this is normal). However, since the latest update, the virtual machine now remains at that small size once the startup has completed and does on automatically resize to 2880 x 1800. Trying to manually resize (View > Fullscreen) only displays at 1024x768.

The settings in Fusion, which have not been altered, are -

  1. Use full resolution for Retina display is checked. Scaled high resolution set to Unity and Full Screen.
  2. Virtual machine > Settings > Single window; Use Fusion Display Preferences and Full Screen; Use Fusion Display Preferences.

Advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Is your VM using the latest VMware Hardware version?

If so, then try to reinstall VMware Tools.


Eg.

Uninstall VMware Tools, reboot the guest and install VMware Tools.

Hi Wil, thank you for your reply.

My VM is running hardware version 16. It is not showing that/if a newer version is available. The box for 'Allow upgrading the virtual hardware for this virtual machine' is checked.

Having looked through the menu's, I'm unsure as to where I can "Uninstall VMware Tools, reboot the guest and install VMware Tools."... your guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,

You uninstall VMware Tools in Windows 10 from the location where you uninstall other applications.

Of course that is in a different spot in Windows 10 as it has been in the past decades.

Click the "orb" in the left bottom, select "Settings"

Then Select "Apps",

In the list you get scroll down until you see "VMware Tools"

Select it, then click "Uninstall", follow the steps to uninstall

Reboot the guest OS.

Then from the Virtual Machine menu select "Install VMware Tools"

If no installer appears, go to the DVD-rom within windows and click "setup" (for 32 bits windows) or "setup64" (for 64 bits windows)

Once you see an installer, click "Next" until Finish, keep the defaults.

It's late here in Holland too Smiley Happy but yes I think it is always a good idea to do something you're not comfortable doing with a clear head.

FWIW, you can always take a snapshot of your VM before you try and do something like this.

Just don't forget to remove the snapshot after you are done.

Hi Wil

Ok, although Windows is all new too me I've done as you said in Windows 10:

Click the "orb" in the left bottom, select "Settings" - done (having Googled to find the 'orb' is the start button!)

Then Select "Apps", - done

In the list you get scroll down until you see "VMware Tools" - done and VMware Tools is not listed when scrolled down??.... then did a 'search this list' and nothing for VMware showed up in Apps.

Ok, so it seems as if it is not installed at the moment.

If -with the VM running and active- you look in your Fusion menu "Virtual Machine", do you have an option that mentions VMware Tools?

If OTOH it says "Reinstall VMware Tools" then you can certainly try that. I did not have much luck with it in the past, but nowadays I do see people who have successfully done just that and got their problems resolved. So it is certainly worthwhile to try.

edit: LOL on orb being the start button.

It used to say start in the past, nowadays it doesn't and I'm not sure what to call it. Perhaps "Windows 10 logo button", but that sounds pretty daft too.

another edit: Oh forgot to say, but VMware Tools takes care of all kinds of things for you. One of them is providing a much better screen driver to windows. So you would want to install that in almost all scenarios.

The issue is resolved... I had to follow your suggestion to:

Virtual machine now displays 2880 x 1800 resolution, perfect!

Can't believe it's already been a month since I last was in London, it was quite wet back then.

But we had a marvelous time anyways.
