Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Startup Freeze

On VMware Workstation 10.0.7-2844087 with a Windows 10 Home 1903 host and a VM with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the VM works fine until all available Ubuntu updates are installed.  After that, it boots to a blank purple screen and no further.

Would this be a VMWare or Ubuntu issue?

I recently had this issue and it appears to be an issue with Ubuntu and video drivers.  I found this article about modifying the grub menu which resolved the issue for me temporarily.  Looking into permanent fix for issue.
