Problem with HA configuration

Hi,

I have a problem with HA configuration.

My installation is:

vCenter 6.7 Essentials PLUS

2 Esxi 6.7 6 Essentials Plus

resources are:

CPU:     Capacity: 67.17 GHz ; Used 783 MHz ; Free 66.23 GHz

Memory:  Capacity: 255.47 GB ; Used 61.87 GB ; Free 193.59 GB

Sorage:  Capacity: 14.9 TB ; Used 2.33 TB ; Free 12.57 TB

so the platform is very free, the load it's very low !!

I try to configure the HA, I did so many tests, but nothing, when I try to put a node in Maintenance Mode, VMware goes wrong:

Insufficient resources to satisfy vSphere HA failover level on cluster XXXXXXX

but there are plenty of resources !!!

If you disable "Admission Control", there is no error but the procedure does not go beyond 2%.

If you move VMs by hand, going to Maintenance Mode isn't a problem.

We also have an installation with 10 nodes, vmware 6.7 and license vSphere 6 Enterprise Plus and the HA works great !!!

We don't know what to do anymore but I doubt that when there are only 2 hosts, there is some particular configuration that escapes us.

Thanks

Best Regards

Essentials Plus does not have DRS so it cannot vMotion the VMs for you when you place a host in maintenance mode. That is why it works if you manually vMotion the VMs. Enterprise plus on your other hosts has DRS so that is why it works there.

What Deso1ator wrote is correct. The host don't go in maintenance mode because of the missing DRS feature in your license.

Insufficient resources to satisfy vSphere HA failover level on cluster XXXXXXX

This may be a different issue. How many hosts do you have in this cluster and what are the admission control settings?

For example: If you only have 2 hosts in a cluster and set admission control to tolerate 1 host failure, this message would appear during the maintenance mode of one host because the cluster can no longer tolerate 1 host failure (because just one active host is left).

Hi,

thanks for your answers, now we have much clearer ideas !!

Yes, we have cluster with only 2 hosts.

The problem is that we would like to do a test for the HA and we thought that the working of the automatic Maintenance Mode was the first step.

So, to test the HA service, we need to turn off a node, right?

Thanks again !!

To test vSphere HA, I would recommend performing 2 tests covering the two most common errors: loss of network connection and power failure.

So I would pull the power cables as the first test. And the second test would be to pull the network cables.

You're welcome! I am just wondering. Why do you want to test HA. Is this a lab environment and you can afford for the VMs to restart?

I recommend to run the following to force a PSOD of a host.

  1. Connect to the vSphere host via SSH.
  2. Type vsish
  3. Type set /reliability/crashMe/Panic

Hi,

always thanks for your answers !!

We are installing a platform with 2 hosts for a client and we have to show him that the HA service works by doing a test but first we want to make sure it works !!

During the week we will do the two tests indicated, loss of network connection and power failure.

Best Regards
