DLR, ESG or Transit Switch what is the difference

Hi experts,

I don't know the difference between DLR and ESG or Transit Switch?

Is it require to use ESG to NSX Edge?

Can I deploy only ESG or DLR and connect directly to NSX edge?

What is the difference between ESG and Transit Switch?

Regards

PK

Hi,

NSX-v has 2 types of edges:

1. Logical router(DLR) : This is a distributed component and recommended for E-W traffic within DC.

2. EDGE : This is not a distributed component and used for N-S connectivity e.g Internet Connection and any communication from Your DC to outside world happen through EDGE.

2. Transit switch : its just a switch to connect DLR and EDGE.

I hope this answer all your queries. Smiley Happy

What is the role of Transit Switch here? Can't we connect DLR directly to NSX edge?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I am looking for NSX-v. I believe there is not much difference between NSX-V and NSX-T. It just that NSX-T has multi hypervisor support.

Moreover, we do require a Transit Switch to connect DLR to edge as you cannot connect them directly.

"If both VMs are on different hosts, naturally traffic will flow to the upstream switches to which the physical host is connected. However, routing is still performed in the ESXi kernel DLR."

To me DLR has a use case when devices talk within host?

If my VMs are behind a DLR, routing will be handled by the DLR (within a host and between hosts, it doesn't matter)
