Making a different VLAN doesn't mean it's a trunk. You have to trunk that new VLAN down one or more switch ports.

This depends on how many VLANs you'll use for VM access. Is it one? Ten? Also, how are your switches configured to operate?

We will use one vlan for management. 5 different vlans will be defined for virtual machine. what is your advice for a physical switch configuration?

Here's one option; all involve two physical switches for redundancy:

  • Two access ports for management (across switches). Both ports in the same team on a vSS/vDS. Management vmkernel port connected.
  • Two trunk ports for virtual machine traffic; all 5 VLANs trunked. Both ports in the same team on a different vSS/vDS.

Just asking for curiosity. If I connect a virtual machine to the management port and make a different vlan. Then management port will be trunk on physical switch. Right ?
