Using Content Library for Central repo for VM templates after patching

Hello Everyone,

Regarding the Content Library in vCenter,  after uploading a template lets say WIndows Server 2016 in this case to the Content Library.  What is the best procedures in updating the template after patching and security updates have come out and need to be applied to what is in Content Librart.

  • I know their is a option to updated the Content Library item but do i really have to re-upload the whole 22GB OVF file
  • Is there a way that the Template in content library can be updated from a linked Template in the regular "VM and Templates folder" ?

Looking for simpler and automated ways to be done with managing templates

Off the top of my head you can deploy new VM from your template, then modify it - then select clone to template library, You then see an option to Update existing template - not sure of any automated way to do this

Sadly, you may be right. I talked to VMware tech support and they also said the same thing.  Feature request has been submitted but maybe soon or later a workaround can be created.
