gobject-2.0.dll and basichttp missing after restart Host. Workstation does not start.

Hello volks,

a few days ago, a strange thing popping up.

The Workstation does not start anymore with message "missing gobject-2.0.dll and basichttp.dll". After re-installing the workstation, the files are present in "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation". Workstation starts. But after the next hosts restart, the files are gone. Workstation does not start.

Who or what removed them? And i am not sure if there any other missing files.

  • Workstation: 15.04
  • AV: Avira (paid version)  / setting: ignore WS program folder
  • Windows: 1809 / 17763.437

If i remember right, both win und avira were updated also a few days ago. But iam not really sure. I noticed some issues with Windows Update and Avira around my investigation but couldn't find anything that looks like a Solution … for me.

Any suggestions? Where to investigate?

Thanks a lot and have a nice day

ciao, Stefan

Hi,

I'd still say: your antivirus product.

Files normally do not just go missing unless they are deleted.

VMware Workstation does not delete parts of its required files.

The only software I know that "randomly" deletes binaries is antivirus software.

Thanks. Yes i am aware of this.

A few days later an update of vmware was installed. Since then the "problem" has disappeared. that was okay with me, i stopped the investigation at that point. All in all just to strange.
