Citrix to Vmware Project

Hi guys!

I have a question regarding Citrix to Vmware migration.

I have seen that if you wasn to migrate a Citrix VM to Vsphere then you need a converter ( Vmware Converter)

I want to ask if its possible to do this with another way?!?

I talked already with Support team but they are break / fix center and not deployments / migrations.

Have a nice day

Regards

Andronikos

Hi AndronikosP and welcome to the community!

I'm going to assume that you are wanting to convert a XenServer VM to VMware? In this case then VMware Converter is your best option depending on the workload running in the XenServer guest, i.e. if its a domain controller then deploy another domain controller as a VM on VMware then decommission the other.

There are other V2V options (PlateSpin was a popular one in the day) however VMware Converter has always worked for me.

Kind regards.

sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but the VM format between Xenserver and VMware is completely different,  the only realistic method of "Migrating" the XenServer VM's into a vSphere environment is via VMware Converter.

you will also depending on what Operating systems are in use on the Xenserver require multiple versions of VMware Converter from version 4 forwards.

Hi AndronikosP,

File and SQL servers are no problems and V2V is an option. DC’s however I would be cautious on as mentioned. Way better to promote a new DC then demote the other once everything is working.

With the file servers you could also use something like RoboCopy to move the data to a new server.

If your current VMs are healthy then V2V is a good way to go and gives you a rollback. Just make sure that no data flows into the SQL server until you have confirmed a successful migration.

Kind regards,

Glen
