Unable to execute any power functions of a VM

Hi all

Having issues powering down / restarting / suspending a VM.

As shown in the screenshot, Whenever I try initiating any of those three functions, I get a error message another task already in progress. I do note that my RAM usage is up to the hilt. I cannot increase RAM as it's disallowing me to power down the VM. I've tried running a VEEAM restore which also failed saying that 'another task is already in progress'.

Any one having this issue? thanks

Hi,

Could the snapshot be left on or the veeam backup agent might be running in the background?

Thanks for the response-

backup agent tried and failed 3 times and has been idle even before we started attending to this. I've also disabled the backups from running

Snapshot feature - currently there are no snapshots for this server (under manage snapshots). I have deleted all snapshots even though there was none - Vsphere reports it was successful.

Is the issue across all ESXi hosts or specific to one ESXi?

Try below steps:

1. Connect to ESXi via host client interface and invoke power operations.

If you still get the same error message most probably hostd will be in  hung state and you might have to restart ESXi host.

2. If you are able to invoke power operations by connecting to host directly, then verify vpxd logs.

  1. Ensure there are sufficient permissions on the virtual machine. In vSphere Client, select the virtual machine. Click the Permission tab. Ensure that sufficient permissions are applied to the user/group.
  2. If permissions are defined at a host, cluster, datacenter or vCenter level, apply the required permissions to the user or group to edit the virtual machine settings.

It could be that the VMware Tools in de guest OS crashed. Try to restart the VMware Tools service in the guest OS and try again...
