Converter Standalone Client 6.2 P2V Ubuntu 18.04 to New Host

Hello,

Learning VMware and how to navigate, migrate, etc. I am trying to move a Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS to a new host. I get to 97% and then the following error presents.

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 127, and message: FATAL: kernel too old Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root Command:

chroot "/mnt/p2v-src-root" /vmware-updateGrub.sh "GRUB2" "(hd0)" "(hd0,1)" /vmware-device.map "grub2-install" '

I've read some older posts with similar failures. The most recent I came across on the www was to get something called platespin. Has there been any updates that would allow the use of the Converter Standalone Client?

Regards,

Ron

Is ubuntu 18.04  bionic even supported  for converter? vmware support matrix implies not supported.   I have related issue.   bunch of bionics on a QNAS  I cannot move over manually as vmware  does nto "recognize format of vmdk",  need tool or methods to do so  if anyone has suggestions.

I found the same issue and it looks like the helper vm used by vmware use a kernell that wont work with the latest ubuntu kernel...at least it didnt worked with 4.0.x in my case.

I used a free tool from starwinds to create a vmdk file out of a vhd file. I then created a new vm with the ubuntu profile, and connected the converted disk and worked fine.

Hope this info helps!!

Good luck

Hi!

I am stuck with the same issue like you had.

I created the img file with dd and then used the Starwind converter but the machine is not booting.

Do you recall then steps you did to fix your issue and which starwind version did you use?

Thanks
