Windows 2000 on VMWare Player

Hello dear Users,

im new in this Forum, also im German and my English isnt pretty well. Please Sorry me for all the wrong sentences :=)

My Problem is following:

I have a Windows 2000 Professional Workstation here which i want to Virtualize, because the Computer-Hardware is slowly gonna die and the whole System is just usable for one Task.

The Task is Simple: The Device is used to Dictate letters.

There is a USB Device connected to the Computer, which records and Reproduces the Sound and gives it to a Programm on the System to write down the Sentences automatically.

My Problem is, that i could Virtualize the Windows 2000 without any Problems, it runs very smoothly and with VMWare Tools is it better than on the Workstation, i can Scroll and click in the machine with the dictating device, but i cant use the buttons for Record, pause, stop or rewind.

The Device is aknowledged by Windows 10 as a HID as i can see, but i think there are no Drivers for Windows 10 from Philipps (The Device is a Speechmike Pro 6274).

So i need Help from the Community now, to Passthrough the Device complete to the Virtual Machine.

I Think it would Work then, because it worked almost 20 Years on the Old System Smiley Happy

I dont know if i will receive Email notifications to this Threads, if i dont answer for multiple Days please Contact me: Danielalpha007@gmail.com

Greetings from Germany and the Netherlands,

Sincerly

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

To have your guest OS recognize HID devices you have to edit the .vmx file and add a new line.

First shut down (not suspend) your Windows 2000 guest, then shutdown VMware Workstation so that it is not running.

Open the .vmx in a plain text editor such as notepad and add the following line:

usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"

Save the .vmx file and close Notepad.

For the details on the settings and an explanation open this document A Power User's Guide to VMware Fusion and scroll down to the "USB HID" part.

With the new setting above you should be able to pass the HID device directly to the guest.

Hope this helps,

I am Strugglin now more and more.

I connected the Device directly to the VM inplace, but the VM doesnt recognise the Device, it says the Functional Driver isnt found..

Hi,

If the .vmx is still reported as being corrupt then please attach it to a reply here.

This happens with a typo or if you used the wrong quote characters (which might happen if you copy & paste the text)

The "attach" button is in the bottom right of the reply window.

edit: It looks like you got past this problem?

It is fine that it is VMware Workstation Player and not VMware Workstation Professional. That is not relevant in this case.

Hi,

Yes, it is possible that you will have to manually re-install the driver from the device again.

Windows 2000 was one of the first Windows versions of Microsoft that supported USB and at that time the support wasn't as smooth as it is now and you had to insert a CD to install the driver software. So I hope you still have the CD somewhere.

Hello,

i tried to direct attach the device and reinstall the drivers via the CD in the VM.

It isnt recognizing the Device at all.

I am really out of ideas right now.

Hi,

Does the device show up in the Windows 2000 device manager?

Have you tried changing the USB interface in the VM between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ?

Hello dear,

In the  Windows 2000 VM the Device is recognised without drivers. I Cant install a Driver for the Device from the CD, it promts me that a better driver is already installed, and if i remove the "better driver" from the system directory, it says that no driver can be found. (I Tried to select all of the NT drivers for testing.)

I also tested to passthorugh the Device directly and then use the original CD Setup to install. That is reporting no error, only that some files are in use (even after i deinstalled the application) and a reboot would be needed.

Greetings
