Host-only adapter does not seem to be running

After upgrading to VMWare 6.0.2, I get the following error when I try to connect my VM to a Host Only network:

"The host-only adapter driver does not seem to be running. If you have not rebooted the host since installing the host-only network adapter, you need to do so before you can use this support. Otherwise, check the system Event Log for an explanation of why service VMnetAdapter did not startup properly.

Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0."

There are no errors in the System Event log. If I open VMWareTools and attempt to connect the Nic1 device, I get the same error. Bridged and NAT modes work properly, but host-only does not. I've attached my .vmx file. I get the same error as soon as I attempt to start a VM that is configured for host only mode, before the OS even starts booting.

VMWare 6.02 build-59824

Host: 32 bit Windows XP SP2

Guest: 32 bit Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003

Unless looking at host Windows event logs gives some clear clues as to where the problem is; I would reinstall VMware Workstation.

Can you post "IPCONFIG /ALL" from host OS?

How is your VMware Workstation -> Edit tab -> "Virtual Network Settings" configured? Please post a screenshot from the "Host Virtual Network Mapping".

After looking at the Virtual Network Settings for the problematic VMWare workstation install, I noticed that there are no adapters listed under "Host Virtual Adapters." On another machine where I have VMWare Workstation installed, there are two adapters listed: VMWare Network Adapter VMnet1 and VMnet8.

For some reason these did not get installed when I upgraded to 6.0.2.

On one machine (the one missing the adapter) I had upgraded from 6.0.0 to 6.0.2, and on the other I upgraded from 6.0.0 to 6.0.1 to 6.0.2.

To answer your inquiry, the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab shows VMNet 0 set to "Bridged to an automatically chosen adapter." VMNet 1-9 are set to "Not bridged"

ipconfig shows:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Reinstalling VMWare Workstation fixed the problem. For some reason the Host Only adapter driver must have failed to install during the original upgrade.

Unfortunately, after reinstalling, now my Bridged network adapter is missing (VMNet0 Adapter is not on the list of Host virtual adapters). I've reinstalled three times now, and this is the case each time.

Just enable VMware network adapters in network connection.

@kunaludapi  Why are you even replying to this thread as it nearly 5 years old and had no activity since Nov, 2007!  BTW Had you actually bothered to read the thread you see the primary issue was already resolved .  The last thing TShepherd talked about was "VMNet0 Adapter is not on the list of Host virtual adapters" so your answer isn't even applicable!
