Cannot vMotion a DLR for regular maintenance

Hi. I am unable to vMotion a DLR for regular maintenance on a host. Is there something special you have to do to move a DRL to another host? Thanks,,,

What is the error message you are getting ?

If possible share the same.

Did you try using VMware vSphere Client for the vMotion. If not please try the same.

disable the Affinity/anti-affinity rules before vMotion, you wil be able to move then.

Hi. But I have 4 hosts in the cluster, there are 2 free hosts to move it do. So I am not sure that will work. I though I read to you had to redeploy the controller? Also I am putting the host in maintenace mode, I have not tried a manual vMotion. But I am concerned I am going to cause a network outage by doing something unsupported. Thanks,,,

Hi jedijeff,

Normally, you should be able to move around a DLR appliance without issue. If there were affinity rules configured, you'd still be able to migrate it, but DRS would likely move it back where it belongs after it's next cycle. If it's failing to move during a maintenance mode operation, try to move it manually. Unless you are using really aggressive BGP/OSPF dead timers, even a momentary blip during vMotion shouldn't cause any grief. The DLR appliance is only used for dynamic routing exchanges and isn't directly in the datapath for east/west routed VMs.

If it fails to migrate manually as well, let us know the error you're getting in the UI.

Hope this helps,

Mike
