Win7Embedded - client 4.9 install fails - solved

Hi,

we have Samsung TC241W clients running Windows 7 Embedded. I was able to update it so far to client version 4.8.0. When I am trying to install 4.9.0, it immediately throws out the exception and install fails.

I did the whole recovery to have clean Win7 Embedded SP1 Standard installed. Then I tried to install clients from version 4.30 untill 4.8.0. That worked. Only the 4.9.0 is not possible to install.

I attached two files, one is the error and the other is the log from TEMP directory.

Is it possible that the Win7 Embedded support was dropped ? I can not find any info about it.

Thanks a lot.

Try extracting the installer and manually installing the prerequisites. I believe starting with 4.9 they switched to the Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2017 Redistributable.

Hi, thanks for the hint.

Extracted the installer, installed the C++ runtime from it. Then I tried to install the client, no luck. Then I tried to install the lonely client from the extracted installer, it gave me the "old" look of the installer, but then it failed on "Failed to install hcmon driver". I looked on internet, even installed Vmware VMRC console, but no luck either.

The installation works with the "old" installer from the extracted installer when I select "no USB redirection". But we use this feature ...

The log you attached doesn't have the information about it failing.

The Samsung TC241W appears to be a thin client. Does Samsung normally provide the Horizon Client or is that you're responsibility to maintain the OS and installed applications? Do you have anti-virus installed on the device? I've seen a similar error when A/V was blocking files.

Hi,

there was some veeeery old View client installed on the Samsung in pre-install image, but it is my responsibility to update it. I unistalled it together with VNC and Citrix clients. And no, no antivirus there.

Thanks.

I double-checked the documentation and Windows 7 SP1 is fully supported but there is one update that is listed as required.

System Requirements for Windows Client Systems

For Windows 7 SP1, install the Platform update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. For information, go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2670838.

Does Samsung provides a newer image that you can use? If not I would make sure the Windows 7 Embedded install is fully up to date, remove any installed VMware software and try installing the latest 4.9.0 client again. If it still doesn't work we really need to see the install logs. Can you try doing a install from the command line to redirect the log file?

Hi,

installed the Platform Update, no luck again.

Tried to install it from command line

VMware-Horizon-Client-4.9.0-9539668.exe /install /log "C:\test", got the attached result.

I tried to redirect it to other locations, same result.

I am logged as an Administrator there, also checked the rights on that folder, no luck....

I can not make full update as there is only 1,5GB free space on the internal storage, which can not be easily replaced Smiley Sad

And no, Samsung does not make any newer Win image ...

Thanks

OK,

tried the installation once again:

1 - clean "restore" of Win7Embedded image from Samsung

2 - installation of VMware-Horizon-Client-4.8.1-8980186 which installed all the necessary components like C++ and .NET.

3 - installed KB2670838 as hinted above

Nothing helped, result same. I tried to install the client only from the extracted installer, but it told me that there is a problem with "hcmon".

Then I tried to update the system, ran Windows Update, sorted out the updates by size and chose the biggest one, which was KB4457144 - September 11, 2018—KB4457144 (Monthly Rollup)

Then I tried to update the client again by running the extracted client only.

AND IT WORKED !!!!

I tried this on one station only, will test it more on others. I have no idea where is the problem with full installer.

Thanks.

It sounds like there is a prerequisite or component in a Windows update that may be necessary. Please let us know if this resolved your issue as you test with other clients.

Hello,

I updated many clients on our side and following is the only working solution I found:

1 - clean "restore" of Win7Embedded image from Samsung (if there is not enough space on HDD, otherwise following steps)

2 - installation of VMware-Horizon-Client-4.8.1-8980186 which installed all the necessary components like C++ and .NET.

3 - installation of KB4457144

4 - installation of VMware Horizon View Client (x86).msi, extracted from the main installer (together with Components32.cab + Core.cab + RMKSComponents32.cab)

This is the only working solution so far. No idea why the full 4.9.0 installer is not working.

Now we have 4.9.0 clients everywhere and I can plan next steps in upgrade.

Thank you all for your hints and help.

Best regards

Guys,

Try installing using fresh VMware Horizon Client 4.9.0 by this "Unchecking HTML5 Multimedia Redirection Support" under customize installation option. It worked me like charm!!!!!.
