Cannot power down, nor force shut down ESXI via excli command

I ma trying to help my mate... we copied via Imagemanger and ShadowProtect SFX in his business, a large 4.4T file onto new hard drive (on same box), to free up spac eon the old drive... But i think this is te cause of the following issue.

5 hours later the VM was stuck  ...  he could not shut down from Vsphere Web Client.. He tried Shutdown, but that was "queued"  with a error .  "Cannot shutdown. A another task is already in progress"

Basically, we tried the following:

1. VMware Knowledge Base(KB1014165)

2. VMware Knowledge Base  (KB1027040)

Using EXCLI commands half way down this article... He can't ping the machine either nor RDP, so i think the 4.T TB file just was to much?

In any case, he remoted in via Putty on Windows (SSH) and issues the commands.

First time he managed to get Process llst (World ID etc),,  he was unable to force shut down resulting same error..  He thought it previous issues commands were somehow stuck, so he disconnected, reconnected to SSH, and did the kill list again... This time it didn't return anything.

Where does he stand now if nothing works?  A local power shut down down on the host only? It's the only VM there. Or should we try the "sending signals to ESXI" continuing the article?

Quite strange that you are not able to kill the PID from the ESXCLI, if you can, just restart the host and it should be right for the VM.

Never used a software like ShadowProtect SFX to copy a VM but well... If I was you I would done a clone of this VM and export it but, now you aren't able.

Restarted host and all looks good. The reason they use Shadowprotect SFX is mainly for incremental backups, as well as scheduled ones. Yes you could do this with any software, but they use Imagemanager to capture snapshots. and since bot go hand-in-hand, it made sense.
