Upgrading ESXi hosts - what about vCenter

Hello forum,

A question (which may be foolish). We are planning to upgrade our

ESXi hosts from ver 6.0 to ver 6.5U2. We have two appliances running vCenter server 6.0.

Does this also require upgrading vCenter server? If so, do the appliances

need to be upgraded before the ESXi hosts -

Thanks for any information on this.

Absolutely, yes it does.

Do the applicances need to be upgraded

before the ESXi hosts - or are the appliances required to be updated as well.

The vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) needs to be upgraded before upgrading your ESXi hosts.

.... and depending what youre running on top of vCenter like Horizion VIEW, NSX and so on, you have to upgrade these first.

Note: The vCenter can only manage Hosts which running on the same or lower version, but never a higher one.

Hello All,

Thanks for the replies. As far as I am concerned they are all the correct answers!

I will note and check all the links you posted - thank you for that.

We do not have anything like "Horizon", etc running on top ot vCenter server,

BUT I found out that we are running the "less expensive" version called "Essentials."

I will do some more digging on this.

Again thanks for all help on this question

Hello Andre,

I think I have been to your web site, where you detail the

upgrade process.

I have the link and the info.

Thanks,
