Ubuntu17.10 cannot run VMware Workstation

Ubuntu17.10 open VMware Workstation prompt Failed to run '/ usr/bin/VMware - modconfig' - icon = 'VMware Workstation - - appname =' VMware '- GCC ='/usr/bin/GCC - headers = '/ lib/modules / 4.13.0-32 - generic/build/include' as user root.Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.

Same error on a new Fedora 29 install with latest player.

Player install seems to work but when you first run it the VMware Kernel Module Updater opens, clicking Install ends with the Xauthorization file problem.

If I login as root there is a different error.

`touch .Xauthority` fixed the Xauthorization problem.

Now my kernel mode updated asks for root password then quietly dies and I can't find any errors anywhere about it.
