Get Guest OS out of VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733

Hi,

Inherited a VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733 on a IBM System x3250 M4.

Unfortunately previous tech is unreachable and no pwd are around or details for the VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733

VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 boots but guest OS does not

Need assistance ("hand holding") on how to to get Guest OS off (to move to more current VMware product...and which one)

Feel free to call....416-315-9398...

I cannot get immediate support from VMWare as VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733 is no longer supported

Guides and paths to upgrade so i can get and have stability without damaging what is there (espcially guest OS) i s vastly appreciated

Appreciative and Thank You for your time,

H

I don't think that anyone here is going to call you, we are a community but not a support team Smiley Happy

The "Guest OS" is the Hypervisor (ESXi) and as you said it's not supported anymore...

Anyway, which error do you get between the POST-BIOS and the ESXi Hypervisor?

Working around the missing password for the ESXi will be easy. What do you know about the guestOS ? - do you have the password for the guestOS ?
If you need assistance feel free to call me via skype "sanbarrow"

Hi ,

When I reboot the system I get 3 lines:

Boot Failed. Windows Boot manager

Boot Failed. CD/DVD Rom

Boot Failed. Floppy Disk (which i don't have)

Then screen comes up saying loading VMware hypervisor at the top

Then screen comes up saying loading VMware ESX i and all its components /xxxxxx.xxx

Then the gray / yellow screen comes up with the information

VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733 (VMKernel Release Build 799733)

IBM System X3250 M4 -[2583AC1]-

Intel Xeon....CPU

RAM

download tools to manage this host from:

http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/

http://IP6 address/ (STATIC0

option at btm is to <F2> customize system/view log and <F12> Shutdown/Restart

So whether I press F2 or F12 i am asked for a pwd, user name of root is filled in as root

i thoght the Host is ESXi and the Guest is the Windows OS 9that i have pwd to)

Error i get is between the POST-BIOS and the ESXi Hypervisor

Boot Failed. Windows Boot manager

Boot Failed. CD/DVD Rom

Boot Failed. Floppy Disk

I would boot the ESXi host into a Linux LiveCD and just copy out the VM with vmfs-fuse.
You will not need  the ESXi root password for that at all.

The root password for the host is for the host only and not the VMs.

A way to look at it is a laptop's bios boot password, and then there is the Windows password, two totally independant.

The plan is to boot the old host into a  Linux LiveCD
http://sanbarrow.com/livecds/moa64-nogui/MOA64-nogui-incl-src-111014-efi.iso
mount the datastore via vmfs-fuse and copy out the VM to a portable USB-disk formatted with NTFS.
The USB-disk will then carry the VM to the new host running VMware Workstation or HyperV.
This way the missing ESXi password is not even required in the process.
