VMWare Fusion 10.0.1 doesn't see USB devices anymore [SOLVED]

My previous setup was:

MacOS 10.12 Sierra

VMWare Fusion 7.1, running

- Windows 7

- Windows 10

All was fine until I upgraded to MacOS 10.13, High Sierra.

Started VMWare Fusion, all well. Started the Windows 7 VM and my iMac crashed instantly. Split second.

Upgraded to VMWareFusion 10.0.1.

Got the "System Extension Blocked" message and allowed VMWare Fusion in the MacOS Security & Privacy settings.

But both Windows 7 and Windows 10 VM's don't see USB devices anymore. No error message, no warning. They just don't see them.

I Googled around, even saw the other post related the subject below, but no solution found.

???

Edit: Completely removed VMWare Fusion and did a clean install. Still the same problem...

Edit 2: Shouldn't there be an usbarbitrator service running in the VM's? I don't see any. Also /var/run/vmware doesn't show anything related.

Edit 3: The service usbarbitration (on the host) doesn't run. /Library/Logs/VMware USB Arbitrator Service.log contents:

2017-10-07T19:47:01.361| ServiceImpl_Daemon: PID 833

2017-10-07T19:47:01.362| ServiceImplRef: Before start().

2017-10-07T19:47:01.576| Warning: UsbarbServiceCommon: exit status 6912.

2017-10-07T19:47:01.576| ServiceImplRef: After start().

2017-10-07T19:47:01.576| ServiceImplDaemon: Exiting with code 0.

Started VMWare Fusion and started usbarbitrator by hand: sudo /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-usbarbitrator --kext /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/kexts/vmioplug.kext

Same results, not working, not running. And log file shows the same.

Beats me.

One thing I found is USB only works for me when I set it to USB 2.0 compatibility versus 3.0. It is under Advanced Settings under the USB settings.

Worked for me.

Reinstalled VMware Fusion 10.1.0 , Rebooted and  open Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and there should be a message at the bottom with an "allow" button.

Launch VMware.

USB working.

OS X 10.13.2

cheers

One more thing to try:

Found this searching for solution to No USB Devices and it clued me in on where to look but none of the specific recommendations worked for me. I did notice though when I opened Security and Privacy under 'Allow apps downloaded from:' section there was a note that an app from VMWare Inc had been blocked. I clicked the button to unblock, shutdown the VM and closed and reopened Fusion. Upon startup the VM recognized all USB devices allowing me to add what I needed.

Hope that helps somebody.

Peeps, for what it's worth I have something to add.  I went through all of this when I did the 10.0.1 update and absolutely nothing worked.  VM's own support were no help and advised me to contact Apple.  Their engineers was very patient and take me through all sorts of things.  In my case the issue that kept us hanging was the 'Allow' button in the security pane.  No amount of clicking would clear the dialogue and so the USB access was always denied to Fusion.  The only thing that worked was to log out of my Mac user account, sign in to a test account (set one up if you don't already have one) and go through the same process of clicking 'Allow' there.  This time it worked and the error message cleared. Go back to your usual user account, fire up Fusion and sure enough all the USB devices are there - Bingo!

Top and bottom, it seems to be an Apple issue, even the engineer had no idea what the cause was but he was going to forward on to Apple.  I've just found this thread as I've done the 10.1.1 update this morning and everything seems to have reset and so I've had to go through the process again.  I hope it helps.

zinone's solution worked for me. In the apple 'system preferences' I allowed access for the VMware usage in the "Security and Privacy" tab. Good luck. The force be with you...

I am so friggin tired of Apple. Every new update to everything they have, software as well as hardware, makes things worse, not better.

Fudge this shizzling company. I so regret buying their horrible new MBP with this shizzling excuse for a keyboard, running this pathetic excuse for an OS.

I am not ever again putting a single cent in their purse.

It'll be Workstation on Linux from now on Smiley Sad

Someone else posted a similar resolution. here's what worked for me:

Moved Fusion to the trash but did not clear out the Trash can.

Then opened Trash, selected ONLY the Fusion.app and dragged/dropped it back into the Applications Folder.

Upon start-up, the app required me to re-enter my license.

Everything and I mean everything was visible to my VM after I started the machine up.

My usual Mac user account is not an administrator of the Mac, Though some of the earlier suggestions in this thread helped me solve the failure, I had to modify the steps because of my non-Admin status. I post them in case they're useful to others.

In my case, I began logged into the Mac as non-Admin.

Stop the all VMs and quit VMWare Fusion ("VMWF")

Open the Applications folder in Finder, and drag VMWF to the Trash. Being non-Admin, I was prompted for Admin credentials, which I provided.

Open the Trash, rt-click VMWF in it, and choose Put back. Again, I provide Admin cred's.

Log into the Mac on an Admin account. Yes, I probably could have done that earlier, but I didn't; here I'm retracing my actual steps.

Then, as Mac Admin:

Launch VMWF. Since this Admin account had never run VMWF, I was prompted to create a first VM. I did not. Instead, I quit VMWF.

Open System Prefs > Security & Privacy > General, and click the button to unblock apps downloaded from VMWare, Inc.

In System Prefs >Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility, confirm that VMWF is among the apps allowed to control your computer (my tick box was already duly checked)

After that, log out of the Mac Admin account, and go back to the usual, non-Admin account; in fact, I'd never logged out from it, I'd just switched to the Admin account temporarily, as macos allows.

With the non-Admin Mac account, launch VMWF and start a Windows VM. Plug a USB drive into the Mac, and (hopefully) say "Yay!" when you get the desired result (i.e. USB drive is accessible to the VM).

This is VMWF Professional v10.1.3 running on macos10.14
