Vblock VMAX to VSAN VxrackFlex Migrations

Is there a way to land external block storage onto a ScaleIO node,  then migrate to the other nodes?

Hello Paul,

Welcome to Communities.

Are your VMs on VMAX running as Hyper-V, KVM or vSphere?

If the latter then it should just be a case of SvMotioning the VMs to the vsanDatastore on your VxRack.

As SvMotion without shared storage is not ideal, you should consider other options such as using a (even temporarily) shared SAN/NAS as swing-storage or other options such as backup+restore at destination.

I was hoping there was a backdoor so I could try and land on a node in the VxRack , like a Pool on VBlock then migrate out of that as I saw someone else do the following.

I have a host that can see the old SAN storage and I am doing a migrate storage and compute to the VXrail on that old host.  So far I can do all of that live, no issues.  I had to create a VSS that matches the VLAN/Portgroups on the old infra as a temp measure as you can't change networks during the migrate.  So my first VXR node I just created a VSS that exactly matched all the port groups on the old infra... and no problems, it now migrates the VMs to the first node on the VXRail.   Next job is to migrate the VMs fromm the VSS to the VDS so they can move to the other nodes.

Thanks

Paul
