Fusion 11 on 10.14 Mojave - Cannot power on virtual machine: Too many virtual machines.

Hi,

I just upgraded from Fusion 10 to 11 on 10.14 Mojave. First all was working fine, but after a restart I'm not able to start any VM. I keep on getting the message "Cannot power on virtual machine: Too many virtual machines.".

Any idea how I'm able to fix this?

Thanks,

Jason

In certain conditions it's noticed that the following change  could help, while we work for additional clarity.

One could verify this Preference and set the following and check.

VMware Fusion > Preference > General > Application menu > Selected 'Never'

So what's changed in Fusion 11 that has this issue ? As Fusion 10 is fine.

I've noticed that if I encounter the error while Docker is running and I quit Docker, VMWare will eventually (after 3 or 4 minutes) allow me to start VMs even without a reboot.

I can confirm that the given solution fixed the issue for me.

Could you please try the following steps:

1.Uncheck 'Start Docker when you log in' under Docker -> Preferences

2.Reboot your macOS without checking 'Reopen windows when logging back in'

3.Launch Fusion and power on the VMs.

Hope that could help.

My setup:

  • MacOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
  • Running the latest version of Docker CE
  • Running VMware Fusion 11

Quick question, though: can I re-enable Docker on login after the reboot or must it remain disabled until VMware finds a permanent solution to this issue?

Many thanks! Smiley Happy

This is the ideal workaround until VMware finds a permanent fix for this issue, as it allows you to continue loading Docker on login while running VMware Fusion 11 VMs at your discretion.

Hi I get the same error message and opened a support ticket. Just had a call with a support technician. We was able to fix the issue by adding VMware Fusion to Accessibility in the System Preferences under Security and Privacy -> Privacy. After a restart I was able to start my VMs. Also I need to update the VMs to version 16. Hope this helps.

Best regards

Robert

My setup:

  • MacOS Sierra (10.13.6)
  • Docker CE (latest edition)
  • VMware Fusion 11

This seems to have worked for me. And, for what it's worth, I'm not running Docker (never even heard of it until reading this thread). But I've been unable to get past this error without rebooting my computer (a real pain in the middle of a busy work day!). Changing the preferences as noted above, then quitting and re-launching Fusion got me back into my VM pronto.

This worked for me on Mojave. Change the preference, restart fusion. No need to reboot or disable docker startup.
