ESXi 6.7 hangs @ dma mapper iommu screen after GPU pass-through

After setting up an ESXi 6.7 server which was running fine I added 4 GeForce GTX 1080Ti GPUs. To enable GPU pass-through in the advanced configuration menu of ESXi I found some hints (e.g. https://struband.net/esxi-6-0-gpu-passthrough/). After rebooting my ESXi systems hangs during startup @ dma mapper iommu screen. Pressing Shift+O or Shift+R during startup didn’t offer any support.

I’d appreciate any advice on

• how to e.g. temporarily disable pass-through of GPU to restart ESXi again successfully
• how to setup GPU pass-through properly while avoiding the error mentioned above

Keep in mind, this isn't a graphics card supported by ESXi 6.7 for pass-through to begin with, so it may not work at all.
