vm migration from one host to another

I wonder what will happen to the vm if there is power interruption in the middle of migration. Does it mean the vm will be ruined? By the way, the migration will be to migrate a vm from one host to another without shared storage.

Any advice on this possibility?

Thank you!

In case of XvMotion (Host + Storage), chances of VM going bad is higher when compared to just a vMotion (just host). That's why, it is not recommended to cancel any SvMotion tasks, creation/deletion of snapshots, etc.

Are you saying that creating a snapshot of the vm will help this situation? Will the snapshot be also migrated during the migration?

Thank you very much!!!

Nope! What I meant was that any (or most) tasks related to storage, cancelling the tasks is not recommended. Tasks could be storage migration, Host+Storage migration, creation/removal of snapshots, etc. To sum it up, VM might (not seen much instances though) go bad if the host+storage migration is interrupted.

but from what I heard, vmotion will make a copy of that data and will not commit until it is successful. Is that true? I'll do a vmtion of host/storage migration.

vMotion is just a host to host migration with shared storage. In your case, you are moving the storage as well which is called as XvMotion.

Yes, a XvMotion (a vMotion without shared storage) will wait until all storage blocks as well as memory contents are confirmed at the destination. If you have a failure that interrupts that process, the VM will not be lost but the XvMotion operation will be canceled and will have to start from beginning again.

thank you very much for the response. I  find a good solution for myself just in case. I can clone the vm before doing a vmotion host/storage migration.
