A question about uplink port group architecture. Why "uplink" exist in uplink port group?

In vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-65-networking-guide document page 30 (https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-65-networking-guide.pdf), it introduce uplink port group.

Base on the description, uplink port group could divide to three levels

level-1: uplink port group

level-2: uplink

level-3: uplink port

But compare with distributed port group, there are only tow levels

level-1: distributed port group

level-2: distributed port

Why the level "uplink" in uplink port group? Is there any special purpose?

An uplink portgroup will have NICs mapped from multiple hosts and is required for external communication. Distributed portgroups are the one that are created internally for the VM and VMkernel traffic.

Thank you for your response!

1. You mention "NICs mapped from multiple hosts", this "nic" refers to the network card on the virtual machine?

2. In the VDS there only has one uplink port group, in order to achieve "NICs mapped from multiple hosts", so we divide the "uplink port group" into several "uplink". I understand it right?
