Vmware HCX for on-Prem to on-Prem Migration

Hello,

Can VMware HCX product be used for the migration of VMs from one on-Prem data center to another other? It looks like this product is only meant for migration between on-Prem and Cloud e.g. Vmware on AWS?

No, you use the native tools built into vSphere for migrations between datacenters in on-premises environments. HCX is for migrations to public/hosted cloud environments.

Thanks for the quick response.

HCX solution not only offers VMs migration but also layer-2 extension (creates a layer-2 tunnel over layer-3). vSphere native tools or third-party tools like zerto, doubletake etc can be used for workload migration, but we will have to find a way to extend layer-2 between data centers using technologies such as OTV, EVPN, L2 link etc if it's desired to keep the same IP addresses. If you have any guides, white-paper on such migration, please share.

Thanks.

Hi,

Does it applies to extended networks with proximity routing enabled? Is it possible to use NSX on source and target sites an HCX-PR? (same environment on-prem to on-prem)

thanks.
