"Attempting to start up from: Mac OS X ... unsuccessful" after updating mac

I updated Mac Os 10.12 to 10.13.5.

After restarting, Mac OS doesn't work and VMware  shows below image:

and after that this page:

I did this changes to .vmx file:

  • removing firmware
  • changing firmware from efi to bios
  • add smc.version = 0 without quotations

and also:

  • Install another mac and mount .vmdk file as second HDD, but it can not open it, and in disk utility it shows the disk as below:

I attached vmware.log file:

Running MAC OS VMs on non-Apple hardware is considered to be illegal by Apple lawyers.
So unfortunately we cant help you.

I am seeing the same issue but I am running on Apple hardware.  I am running ESX 6.5 on a Mac Pro Desktop and when we upgraded a VM running on it, the VM ended up in this non-bootable state.

Can you provide any help in this case?

Try asking in either the Fusion forum (since that is the Mac host product) or ESXi forums.

With some additional research I was able to determine the fix.

The ESXi version must be at least 6.5.0 U2 in order to run MacOS 10.13.  Once I upgraded my ESXi host this morning the VM powered on and everything is working as expected.

Hope this helps someone else.
