VMDK has one or more internal errors that cannot be fixed

Hi,

I am getting "VMDK has one or more internal errors that cannot be fixed" error when trying to power up an Ubuntu 14.06 virtual machine.

vmware-vdiskmanager -R is not able to fix the problem. VMLog is attached.

Is there any possibility of recovering the data?

AFAIK current vmware-vdiskmanager -R function is a bluff so that is expected.
As your vmdk seems to be severly damaged I would suggest to copy it to a Windows host and try 3rd party-tools like Starwind V2V-converter or WinImage.
Maybe you know someone who still uses Workstation 7 ? - the vmware-vdiskmanager -R function still worked with 7.1
There are also other versions of vmware-vdiskmanager included in the VDDK-kit but unfortunately the latest versions also seem to be broken.

Thanks to both!

vmware-vdiskmanager 7.1 did not work (segmentation fault previously  showing a NOT_IMPLEMENTED error). Anyway, windows tools did help, so I recover the information I needed.

If you are having a similar issue then I suggest not to follow the steps from this thread, but instead open your own topic and attach a vmware.log of the VM with the problem and describe the issue you have.

Rather then trying to fix it yourself, let the experts look at your log file and see what is the best action to take.

Similar issue is not always same and taking the same steps can have serious side effects.

One thing you can do in the mean time is shut down the VM (if not already) and make a full copy of the VM to an external disk.
