USB devices on USB C docking station

I have a Dell Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station attached, via USB C, to my Dell Precision 5520 laptop which is running Windows 10. When I connect devices to the USB ports on the docking station, they do not show up in the list of removable devices in VMware Workstation so I cannot connect them to the guest machine. If I attach the same devices to the USB ports on the laptop itself, they show up in the list of removable devices and can be connected to the guest.

I am running Workstation 14 Pro.

Can anyone help me to get VMWare workstation to recognise the USB devices on the docking station so that I can attach them to the guest machine?

Is the docking station connecting via the Thunderbolt or USB protocol?

Although Thunderbolt 3 uses the same physical connector as USB C they are different protocols.
