Windows 10 April update made bootcamp unbootable

High Sierra 10.13.4, VMWare 10.1.1, Windows 10 installed on BootCamp

Just after installing April's Windows 10 update, VMware refuses to boot the bootcamp VM. Trying to boot says the boot camp disk is not a valid disk, and deleting the VM and recreating it again gives following error when processing the bootcamp disk:

"Boot Camp volume preprocessing failed. You may not be able to boot your Boot Camp volume as a virtual machine."

- The bootcamp partition boots up totally fine restarting the laptop, so no VM.

- The VM was working perfectly just before the update.

Is any one aware of any workaround or am I totally screwed?

Cheers!

EDIT: So after the disk processing error, and a couple of failed boot attempts, it finally booted up, restarted a couple of times, and seems stable.

But in the case it didn't, let this serve two important lessons (in my opinion):

  1. Probably best to not assume that the bleeding edge updates for the latest OSs will work completely without error.
  2. More important to #1, *always* snapshot your VMs before major OS patches/updates.

Just want to point out, it is not possible to take snapshot of the VM in this scenario as Bootcamp partition is used here. Bootcamp would be equivalent to using RDM in ESXi so snapshots are not supported.

Yes, absolutely, conveniently skipped over that part.

davperuser,

I had a try on my MacBook Pro:

1. Boot into my Windows 10 1709 Boot Camp

2. Use "Check for Updates" to upgrade the OS in Boot Camp partition to Windows 10 1803

3. After the Boot camp OS is upgraded, Boot Mac host to 10.13.5 macOS

4. Use Fusion 10.1.1 to power on Boot Camp partition

[Actual result] Same as you, the Boot Camp partition failed to power on with message "The file specified is not a virtual disk"

5. I then delete the Boot Camp virtual machine and recreate it

6. Power on the Boot Camp partition again

[Actual result] Same as you, I saw "Boot Camp volume preprocessing failed" message. However after I dismissed the message, I saw the new Boot Camp VM appeared on VM Library, and double clicking it can power on the Boot Camp partition successfully

So could you please double-check if the Boot Camp VM is created on your side? If yes, what happen if you try to power it on?

Hi!

Thanks for you responses!

JessieZhang

yes, after a couple of attempts the new VM ended up booting up. I updated the initial post.

Thanks!
