Moving file server to vm

Hello,

Current setup:

ESXI running on DL360G7, 1TB HDDs, SD card with ESXi.

File server running on DL380G7, 8TB HDDs running Windows Server W2008R2

I want to upgrade the system on file server, but I was thinking of moving it to ESXi, moving the HDDs from ESXi to File server, but I don't have enough knowleadge what I would need to do.

Could you give me some tips?

Regards,

Konrad

Describe in more detail this phrase "I want to upgrade the system on file server, but I was thinking of moving it to ESXi, moving the HDDs from ESXi to File server, but I don't have enough knowledge what I would need to do."

I want to upgrade Windows 2008 to Windows 2016.

If I would move this physical instance of file server to VM, I would want to have the hardware used as storage for VMs and user files shared on that file server.

I would no longer need the current two HDDs no the ESXi server so I could move them to the storage server to increase storage.

Thanks for the clarification, now I understand what you want. Take a look at this option.
