Trying to use Workstation Player 12 at a multiuser-environment

Hi there.

I'm trying to use the VMware-Workstation-Player 12 at a Ubuntu-16.04 LTS Client with a multiuser-environment.

Actually I've installed the VMware-Player by using the admin-account and I've configured a WIN-10 as guest.

Now I tried to use this VM with a normal user-profile. The installation of the guest is located at /opt/vmware. It accords necessary rights to every user (read / write).

Now, at the first startup by using a normal user-account, VMware asks for a valid email for registration. At the next step I select the existing installation of the WIN-10-guest at /opt/vmware.

After choosing the *.vmx - file, the virtual machine appears at the library. If I try to start it, nothing happens. There is no problem report, not a flashing of the desktop, nothing.

I hope, I could explain the problem. Is there a possibility to fix it?

Haber gerade eben erst gesehen, dass in dieser Community auch deutsch gepostet wird, deshalb nochmal das Ganze auf Deutsch - Weils für mich einfacher zu beschreiben ist:

Ich habe den VMware-Player 12 unter Ubuntu 16.04 als Desktop installiert. Als virtuelle Maschine habe ich Win10 eingerichtet.

Nund möchte ich diese Maschine auch die anderen User in ihren Profilen nutzen lassen. Dazu habe ich die virtuelle Maschine unter dem Pfad /opt/vmware anlegen lassen und davor jedem User Lese- und Schreibrechte für diesen Ordner und die darin enthaltenen Daten eingeräumt. In dem Systemverwalterprofil funktioniert die VM einwandfrei. Melde ich jetzt einen anderen User an und starte den VMware-Player, dann werde ich zunächst nach der Proformaregistrierung mittels Emailaddy gefragt obwohl dies im Systemverwalterprofil schon abgearbeitet wurde. Anschließend suche ich mir die bereits installiere VM und wähle von ihr die *.vmx-Datei aus. Die Maschine wird im Library angelegt, kann jedoch nicht gestartet werden. Es geschieht gar nichts, keine Fehlermeldung, kein Flackern, nichts.

Als nächsten Versuch habe ich den bereits im Systemverwalterprofil angelegten Ordner in das Profil des Users kopiert (genauer gesagt, ich habe ihn in die /etc/skel/ eingefügt und anschließend einen neuen User angelegt - so ist die richtige Rechtevergabe gewährleistet). Beim Start von VMware das gleiche Procedere wieder: Emailaddy eingeben, Maschine importieren (obwohl der Verweis darauf bereits in dem versteckten Ordner /home/.vmware vorhanden ist) und nichts passiert.

Wer kann mir dabei weiterhelfen? Vielleicht sei vorweg zu erwähnen (ich wurde bereits im ubuntuuser-Forum danach gefragt), es werden sich keinesfalls zwei User nacheinander anmelden und die virtuelle Maschine ein zweites Mal starten. Es wird also immer nur eine Instanz davon laufen.

What are the permissions on the virtual machine files (vmx, vmdk)?

That was my fault.

I did the chmod before installing the VM. Now I did it again, after finishing the installation. Now it works!

Sorry for the late response!

Every user has rwx to this folder.

Today I found a hidden folder at the users home.

That causes the problem. During install and first configuration I looked for this case. There has been nothing. I don't know why it was working without this files in /home/.vmware at the first time. During every update the date of the contained files of this folder changes to the actual date.

One possibility which avoids this problem is to include the user at the admingroup - so the user could start the VM-Ware actualisation by himself. But that a heavy risk to the security of the system.

A better possibility seems to move this hidden folder outside the users home.

But how could I do this? Where do I have to change the location for this hidden files?
