UEM 9.3 Folder Redirection?

Has anybody tried the folder redirection with 9.3 yet? In the past, the local paths C:\users\xxx were not being redirected as Windows GPO was doing. Which has kept me from using UEM to handle the process. My test environment on 9.3 shows the quick access libraries as correct and redirecting, but the local C:\users is still wrong.

Correct library:

C:\users\username incorrect

Did you test with UEM 9.2 already?

The release notes state this:

    • Duplicate folders might appear after enabling Folder Redirection.

When you enable folder redirection feature through User Environment Manager, duplicate folders are observed in the user profile. One of the folders points to the redirected location and the other is on the local hard drive.

The issue is resolved in this release.

And in the 9.3 release some more optimizations were added for Folder Redirection:

Redirected folders don’t have localized name

When a folder is redirected, File Explorer displays its English name instead of the localized name.

This issue is resolved in this release.

File Explorer shows correct location for redirected folder under “Quick access”, but original location under “This PC”

For certain redirected folders, File Explorer on Windows 10 can display the original folder location under “This PC”.

This issue is resolved in this release.

Pim,

I tried in previous 9.2 builds when I saw the release notes you linked. I had the same behavior in 9.2 as I do in 9.3. The redirection does work however manually browsing the local C:\users path has the non redirected directories.

Don't these folders always exist? What happens when you configure Folder Redirection using a Microsoft GPO? I think those folders will exist also.

When using Microsoft GPO the folders do not exist, and I don't run the risk of having users using that local path and "saving" anything is not actually being redirected.

I'm pretty sure they never existed when using redirection, basically the libraries and shortcuts for those folders are redirected so they aren't needed. I tried something similar to this without much success

Manual Folder Redirection with Symbolic Links • Helge Klein

if you use symbolic links for those folder they do show up, but I had enough problems with consistency I gave up.

I give UEM a shot every update as the release notes say they fix the issue. I'm sticking with GPO handling the redirection unless I can get a working solution with UEM.

Quote from VMware support. So UEM and folder redirection is a no-go and are sol on the directories without manually handling it myself.

"Thank you for your support request. Checking in, as Josh noted earlier this week we have reviewed what you are experiencing and it is expected behavior. Our product does not delete the local copies of redirected folders, we have confirmed with our developers that this is in order to protect any potential end user data. As noted, if you like, the folders can be deleted using other methods outside of the product. Additionally, if you need more functionality for Folder Redirection than what UEM provides then the MS Folder Redirection GPO is a better option for you.
As we have clarified the expected behavior with the product this case has run it's course, but I will place it in a 72hr monitor in the event that you have any other questions."
