windows 10 blank screen in workstation 14.1

Hi all

I went thru various threads regarding the blank screen issue with latest windows patch.

I was working on my vm windows 10 and it was patching at the background and did not really take note what version it was running

The next time it boot up, i can see the windows startup screen and blank screen at login.

I had turned off 3d, disable GLBasicRenderer

I tried to go into safe mode by hitting f5 and f8. but i got into vmware boot manager instead

I tried to blindly install latest vmware tools but it seems that it may required manual intervention.

Anyone got a fix to this?

Do you have RDP enabled on this VM? Have you tried logging into it that way?

The GLBasicRenderer setting is unlikely to have any effect on Workstation on Windows host unless you also disable DX11. Anyway, that workaround was for Fusion VM black screens with a particular version of macOS Sierra with Broadwell CPUs.

There have been some users who report blank/black screens when they have VPN active on the host. If you have VPN active, maybe that is the factor.

You could also try the steps specified here Re: workstation pro 14 upgrade from ver 12 produces blank screen when running existing VM's

thanks all for help

managed to find an ISO and attached to my VM and went back into my VM

for those who need help

1. attach iso to the vmware

2. once start, press f5 and boot into vmware boot manager

3. select cd-rom. it will boot into windows iso

4. Windows Setup > Repair Computer > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt

5. Type bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal in command prompt

6. Close command prompt, click on Continue to allow boot

7. Hopefully, you able to boot to windows by now

8. open Windows Settings, and go to device manager.

9. Disable any added display adapter.

10, Remove safe boot in command prompt > bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

11.  Reboot again... and wait......
