Migration vSphere 5.5 to 6.5

Dear fellows of the community,

i am planing a migration from our live vmware environment vsphere 5.5 to a new one with 6.5

the existing environment contains 40-50 VMs for our production and AD network.  i am running four esxi hosts who are working in cluster mode for thoose servers, attached to the vmware is a datacore storage and all are used with dell hardware.

The new Hardware will be also from dell and the new storage will be most likely also from dell compellent. Now im wondering myself if there are best practice migration steps whom i have to follow and how to plan this project properly.

The sizing of the new environment will be done in april/mai as well as planing the new vsphere and storage hardware.

Any experiences which are available are highly appreciated

Kind regards

Markus

Hi!

You can use planning tool Announcing the vSphere 6.5 Topology and Upgrade Planning Tool - VMware vSphere Blog

As well check some useful KBs

- upgrade sequence VMware Knowledge Base

- important information before upgrade VMware Knowledge Base

- best practices VMware Knowledge Base

As well if you have existing VC on Windows machine, move it to VCSA with migration tool during upgrade vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 Migration Walkthrough - VMware vSphere Blog

Also check compatibility between vsphere 6.5 and your 3rd party systems like monitoring, backup and recover. And check if you need to upgrade them as well.

There is also a great tool to measure the overall performance/latency/throughput/IOPS and so on of your environment during a week intervall.
