I am running vCenter Converter Standalone to backup/copy virtual machines from my free version of ESXI to windows.
After 1% I get the error:
> FAILED: Unable to obtain the lock on virtual disks
I am logged in as root and the VMs that I am trying to backup are powered off.
I tried looking at the logs, but there are so many that I couldn't find any additional info.
HELP!
Hi jjlolo,
Here are the probably reasons and how to solve it :
– Shut down the VM before conversion
– Try the live conversion by Powered-on machine
– The VM was not shut down safely, restart and shut down it properly
– Delete all .TMP files associated with the virtual disk
– Delete all .WRITELOCK files associated with the virtual disk
– Delete all .LCK folders associated with the virtual disk
Regards,
Let us confirm that you have choosen conversion source as vSphere virtual machine.
then provided the ESXi host IP and root credentials
Then after selecting the VM and completing the task you are getting error?

Correct, I'm logging in to the ESXI, selecting shutdown machines (2).
Which log file is best to attach? There were several in the zip and I couldn't find the right one.
EDIT: I figured out what the issue was; I had the target set as a mapped network drive. When I changed it to my desktop it worked. What a stupid bug!
Thanks.
I tried your suggestions, but there were no lock files etc. In fact one of the machines was shut down about a month ago.
Because I had this working a few months ago on another ESXI install, I figured out what the issue was; I had changed the target set as a mapped network drive. When I changed it to my desktop it worked.
I guess I uncovered a bug! 😕
Hi,
I had the same problem with conversion virtual machine on vCenter Converter Standalone 6.3.
My bugs were like : " Cannot format volume" or "The file is locked or in use". I thought the problem was the use free vMware ESXi license or something like that...
Your suggestion help me a lot. Thank you, it works!! 😉
