vm copy fails with error: Failed - Error caused by file... esxi 6.5

I am trying to copy a virtual machine that has no snapshots to a new hard drive using the web UI.

The virtual machine is powered off. Using the data store browser, I right-click on the folder that belongs to the virtual machine and select copy.

Then I select the new datastore that I want to copy it to, and click on the copy button in the bottom right of the window.  The copy begins, but quickly fails with the following error:

Does anyone know what I can do to correct this problem?

That's not a recommended approach to moving a VM. It's better and safer to use a backup approach and then restore that where you like. Veeam has a free version which can allow you to do just this and store the resulting file on whatever media you like.

Hello,

you also could try to copy the files using "vmkfstools"

VMware Knowledge Base

Best regards

vmkfstools will not allow you to download a copy of the virtual machine's files to a local workstation, only copy "horizontally" to another disk device seen by the source ESXi host.
