Linux VM boot up problem in VM workstation

We created a vmdk by VM Converter but failed to boot it up at WM workstation.

Source Physical Server: RedHat Linux 7.3 hosted on an old IBM e330 server

Targert:

Initially a VM workstation on notebook.

Finally on ESXi Server on a HP DL380 G10

The steps we have done so far:

1. Use a VMWare Converter 3.03 startup disk to cold boot the source server and generate a VMDK (VMDK1) into a USB thumbdrive

2. The VMDK1 cannot be boot up at VM workstation on notebook. Showing some error related to RAID

3. Use the BIOS of the RAID controller to dissolve the RAID 1 and remove the 2nd harddisk from server

4. Re-do the VM Converter for to try to generate a VMDK 2. VMDK 2 generation failed after some time. The system just rebooted.

5. Try to use CloneZilla to clone the system instead. But the CloneZilla report bad block found on harddisk

6. Scan/repair the bad block. Scan/Repair success.

7. Re-do the VM Converter to generate VMDK 3.

8: Try to boot up the VMDK 3 and get the following error messages:

Creating root device

Mounting root filesystem

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, error = 2

mount: error 6 mounting ext3

privotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2

Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = option to kernel.

Any help?

Hi
the Converter LiveCD does not import RedHat.
To import a RedHat via Converter you MUST use ESXi as the target.
If you can not use an ESXi VM as the target you must create a full disk image and adjust / rebuild initrd manually.
Search google - there are a few howtos for this scenario.
