"Auto-detect settings" instead of "Specify custom settings" for vm11 video card?

When we create a new vm, the default appears to be "Specify custom settings" with 4Mb of vram allocated, which I usually leave as-is.

Windows Servers generally need only minimal video card settings, we only need to look at them during setup and then we are done, as server apps are are typically web or client managed.

Recently, I tried "Auto-detect settings", no resolution specs or numbers are ever revealed in the settings, yet appears to work fine in the VMRC with pretty colors. It still appears as VMware SVGA 3D with resolution choices into the sky.

(Note: the 3D Memory 256.00 MB is always there.)

Are there any more details about "Auto-detect settings" for the vm video card? And if this is indeed an optimal setting, which adjusts depending on usage, like the days of DVMT in the bios?
