ESXI 6.5 U1 - Cloning VMDK - Unexpected behavior

Hi everyone,

A little background on the environment

Standalone ESXI 6.5 server with a VMFS 5 Datastore

I have a virtual machine i use as a template, i can clone it fine on this host with vmkfstools, attached it to a new VM without a problem

The disk itself is a 40GB thick provisioned disk

Just commissioned a new ESXI 6.5 U1 standalone host, this time this has a VMFS 6 Datastore

I have successfully copied the entire VM's folder to the new host using SCP

Now i am cloning the disk as before, but this time i am also specifying the -d thin perimeter to convert it to a thin disk at the same time, the command confirms the destination disk is  VMFS thin-provisioned

But when i create a new virtual machine and attach this new disk, now it's 20GB in size and still thick provisioned

What am i missing?

Thanks

Andy
