Is there any advantage to keeping the native open-vm-tools that come bundled with CentOS 6.6 and 7.0, versus removing them and replacing them with the VMware Tools that can be installed through vCenter?
Guests are running on an ESXi 5.5 U2 host, managed by vCenter 5.5.
I don't see open-vm-tools in CentOS6/RHEL6. Therefore I use the VMware Operating System Specific Packages (OSPs) as RPMS from here:
With CentOS7/RHEL7 and later use the bundled open-vm-tools.

For ESXi 5.5U2, according to the VMware Compatibility Guide: Guest/Host Search open-vm-tools is Recommended with CentOS 7.0. Both VMware Tools or open-vm-tools are supported.
VMware Tools and the Operating Specific Package (OSP) are both supported with CentOS6.6. VMware Compatibility Guide: Guest/Host Search.
Hi all!
I have an almost similar question: what is VMware Co. thinks that open-vm-tools have long been available as ready-made rpm-files for RHEL/CentOS 6.x on EPEL repo?
I.e., can I use the RHEL/CentOS 6.x guest OS with the above rpm-files from EPEL repo, for example under ESXi 5.5U3? Problems will be or not?
Very thanks for the support.
