That's somewhat old news, actually. In the latest release of 6.6, multicast is no longer needed so not to worry.
To answer your query why it is needed?
It is how master communicates with the salve in vSAN cluster.
Every time master is elected directory updates occurs for disk groups, disk and objects (major). This traffic is eliminated somewhat using Backup Master.
But it is purely for faster election of master and avoid extended downtime as result of this.
But starting 6.6, you do not need to enable multicasting on switches.With Great Regards,1 person found this helpful
