Hello
I have a very old system, that was a physical machine and i have virtualized it on an ESX enviroment.
Because is an old machine, no one knows how to reinstall it, so i have to keep at it is.
The Host OS is Ubuntu, and has a Vmware Workstation 8 installed on it.
The Guest machine is a Windows XP (i know, is everything very old).
Since the virtualization, the network on the guest machine is not working.
I have edited the network manager, delete all the networks, created a new bridge, but does not work, guest machine only ping to the host machine.
Any ideas were i can start looking?
Thanks!
There seems to have several factors involved in this case, but I don't know if you'd been able to exclude any of them and/or identify those to focus on. For example:
1. ESX virtualization.
2. VMware Workstation 8.
3. The Guest machine is a Windows XP
4. the network on the guest machine
So, you may have to test against these items individually.
I don't know if Windows XP is supposed by VMware Workstation v12. If yes, can you upgrade your v8 to v12.5.x?
You said

I don't know why you would have to "edit" or "delete" or "create" anything in network manager. It seems you're using Bridged, but regardless of network type, the default should work until proved otherwise. If it didn't work, you could restore defaults.
So, Ping seems working from your guest to its hose. Then, what does the description below really mean in technical terms?
the network on the guest machine is not working
> guest machine only ping to the host machine.
That sounds like expected behaviour when the networkcard is configured as "host only"
Hello
Thanks for the answers, lets see:
First all, this is and old system, configured by people that im sure they dont knew what they doing, and now, we cant change anything, because the people are using this system now, dunno anything about the code is there, and they are scared about changing anything lol

Im sure the customer will not like to pay for a new, anyway, i tried v9, and when i try to power on the guest, ubuntu restarts :S

Yes, right after i virtualize it, the guest machine got no network, so.. i tried that

Sorry, i mean, the guest VM (XP) can ping the host ubuntu (are in the same network), but cant ping machines in the same network, and no internet, the host machine can.

You mean inside Workstation? Im sure is bridged, at least on the network editor.
Just on this one,
the guest VM (XP) can ping the host ubuntu (are in the same network), but cant ping machines in the same network, and no internet, the host machine can.
I agree with continuum that this looks like a host-only connection on the VM. You said in your response to continuum that you are sure it's Bridged. So, how about post a screenshot of your VM's settings?
Of course, you might have multiple issues here, as you said below:
i tried v9, and when i try to power on the guest, ubuntu restarts
I don't know if an installed software could cause OS to restart, but I suggest we focus on one issue at a time.
Hello!
Sure, here the screenshoots:
First, I have to admit that I don't have any experience in VMware Workstation before v12. So, I don't know if what your screenshot shows is correct or simply the result of your own "modifications" which you mentioned earlier. Only as a reference, here's mine:
So, let's assume that missing VMnet1 and VMnet8 in your Virtual Network Editor is not an issue or concern at the moment. Also, let's assume that v8 did/does not have "Restore Defaults" button or function. Could you try to set "Bridged to:" to Automatic? After that, make sure all options are checked/selected in "Automatic Settings...".
You may need to restart VMware Workstation after making these changes. Then, if the same problem remains in your guest, which should have been restarted as well, try disable the network adapter in the guest before re-enabling it. We can see if this would make it work.
Since the Virtual Network settings seem to be ok, let's look at the network settings at the host and the guest.
What IP-addresses does your host and guest have? What is the default gateway for host and guest? Which nameservers do host and guest use?
